presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead there, six-point l

. this will be the eighth one on one presidential debate of his political career. for mitt romney, it will be his first. so what is at the root here? is this a little reverse psychology? >> right, they're trying to lower expect takings for their respective candidate, making the other guy seem like he's lincoln or douglas or the greatest debaters in the history of the united states. so that if they don't do so well, the expectations game is a little lower. reminds me when al gore was debating george w. bush in 2000, al gore, the vice president of the united states, was seen as a great debate, george w. bush not so much. but then al gore, you know, had some fumbles and in terms of the sighing he did and a lot of people were paying attention to that. and bush all of a sudden looked a whole lot better. these debates can be significant for relatively trivial things like that, if, for example, and you remember when the first president bush, george h.w. bush, you know, at one of the presidential debates started looking at his watch and it looked like he was ready to move on. let's get out of

-on-one presidential debate of his political career. for mitt romney it will be his first. i suppose the question is it is games man ship on most accounts but does it work? >> they're trying to lower expectations. they're trying to make the other side seem fabulous, great debaters if you will. i think everybody is onto what they're saying in advance of the debates. i think they're both solid debaters, the president of the united states, i moderate rated four debates four years ago when he did debates and didn't have to do any this cycle because no one was challenging him for the democratic presidential nomination. i did moderate four last time including that final one-on-one debate that he did with hillary clinton at the kodak theater in los angeles and he is very good and hillary clinton i thought was a better debater and ironically joe biden and chris dodd did really well and the president obviously got the democratic nomination. he is a very solid debater. i moderate rated four republican presidential debates with mitt romney and i have the same feeling about him. very solid. know

for mr. romney to look presidential at a time when polls show strong support for mr. obama's foreign policy is slipping. you are a former speechwriter. what does governor romney need to say today? >> well, it is interesting because president obama -- just a few weeks ago president obama was boasting about his foreign policy achievements and mocking mitt romney for how little foreign policy experience he has. it is a difference what a couple of weeks makes. as you point out the polls show the support for president obama's foreign policy is dropping particularly among independents. . ohio is a must win for the romney campaign. no republican presidential candidate has ever won the white house without winning the state of ohio. cnn political director mark preston is in washington. so that's a pretty stunning poll, don't you think? >> it is, carol. it's got to be disturbing for the romney campaign. when you dig into the numbers a little bit deeper, you see that president obama has a 15 point advantage over mitt romney when it comes to women and mitt romney only has an 8 point advantage over barack obama when it comes to men. even more startling, for somebody who is trying to make this campaign all about the economy, when the question was asked who would do a better job handling the economy, barack obama comes in at 51%. mitt romney 45%. you know what, carol, he did try to make that case today. just a short time ago mitt romney at a campaign rally tried to sell this argument to his supporters. let's take a listen. >> i don't believe we can afford four more years like the last four years and the reason i believe that after the debates, after the campaigns, after al

romney are about to come face-to-face for their first presidential debate. it happens wednesday night in denver. both candidates have been practicing for the event and both campaigns are trying to lower expectations by presenting their candidate as the underdog. while the candidates prepare for the debate, their running mates are courting voters, as well, in critical battleground states. republican paul ryan is in new hampshire and ohio today and vice president joe biden is wrapping up a two-day swing through florida right now. right now, live pictures. he is holding a rally there and talking to supporters in ft. myers. >>> all right, now to a controversy over the legitimacy of voter registrations in florida. an election official in palm beach county tells cnn as many as 106 voter registration applications may be fraudulent containing false information and fake signatures. the applications were turned in by a consulting firm hired by the republican national committee to register voters. the rnc says it has cut ties with that firm. >>> president obama and mitt romney facing ameri

preparation for the presidential debate, president obama and mitt romney are going to see the first one right here on wednesday. that debate is coming. and you're going to see where they are in the process of preparing in just a moment. the debates and the election, of course, are serious. and that would be our first story. serious. until we discovered this video, stunning video shot from the helmet of a u.s. soldier, it seems like a video game. but this is not xbox which you're about to see. it is real. the pentagon is telling us it happened, it happened in afghanistan in april. afghanistan is a place we have not heard these candidates talk about much, have we? nothing from romney during the republican convention, very little from obama, especially at the u.n. this last week. the debates will likely be a different story because this weekend the death toll for americans in the war surpassed the 2000 mark. the soldier who made the helmet cam video suffered only minor wounds and has returned to duty. but it's amazing that he suffered only minor wounds when you see this incredible stor
